Swing Time
It was a beautiful morning to jog on over to Concord, a short two-block street just off Riverside. Concord curves upward from Riverway, crosses Hilliard and ends at the marginal. Despite being a shorter street it felt like the swing capital of Lakewood. There was a yellow-disc swing, a yard with two kiddie swings on the same tree, and the picture I took of a large purple tire swing. I was tempted to jump aboard for a ride, but there was no weight limit sign, and I didn’t want to bring a tree branch down this morning.
I have always enjoyed swings. We had a swing set in our first Lakewood backyard that we moved to our current home. It was old and wooden and would have “cherry bumps” causing the whole construction to rock back and forth when the kids got going too high. We lost that swing set when a large oak tree fell on it several years ago. My favorite swings in Lakewood were the old chair swings at Lakewood Park where you could propel yourself by pulling on arm bars. They were removed years ago, but I think they were truly unique and I miss them.
I also noticed there haven’t been many mailboxes on the streets I have completed up to this point. There was one on the corner of Hilliard and Concord though. I do think I am getting a little bit of a mail carrier vibe in doing this challenge. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays Michael Daso from the swift completion of his appointed streets”.
