Follow the Red Brick Road
I got to hang out in Lakewood’s Southside this morning. Fischer is one the few streets in Lakewood south of the highway. I biked all the way down Riverside to get to the neighborhood, and as soon as I turned down the street I noticed it was completely paved in red bricks.
I then saw a resident doing some charitable yardwork. He was digging up Hosta plants, repotting them, and placing them on his tree lawn with a “FREE” sign next to them. What a nice guy. I struck up a conversation with him (thanks for your time Tom), and he informed me that the north side of the street is in Lakewood and the south side of the street is in Cleveland. In fact, there is a plate that runs down the middle of the street that defines the border.
I snapped a pic of my bike in both cities, and you can clearly see the dividing line separating the bricks. I wonder if Lakewood plows one side of the street and Cleveland plows the other.
Then I came to a very distressing corner. Staring at me was evidence that I had not walked all of Atkins when I did it two months ago. I didn’t realize there was this little Southside segment. I thought the best I could do was walk Atkins today at part of Fischer. I hope the A-to-Z Gods will forgive me.
One last interesting note is that almost all of the Lakewood houses on Fischer were also built out of red bricks (you can see a few in the background of the Atkins pic). It gave an olde world feeling to the entire street.
