Bushes and Driveways

I decided to jog over to Gladys this morning. The round trip was about a 5K, so I had a little more time to think about my route than I do when I ride my bike to my destination street. I thought it would be fun to challenge myself to find the most interesting bush and driveway while I was walking down Gladys. I’ve started to notice beauty in the ordinary, but this was stepping it up to a new level. Surprisingly, picking just one winner in each category proved to be difficult.

Gladys is a north-south street that runs from Detroit Avenue right by “The Exchange” up to Clifton Boulevard. As I was on my route, I ended up taking multiple pictures of driveways and bushes.

The bush victor was a sculpted yew bush, also known as a taxus bush. It reminded me of a mallet that you would pound into a giant bass drum. Yew bushes seemed to be the topiary of choice, as there were several others trimmed to unique shapes of varying sizes. The runner-up was a yard that had two giant pyramid-shaped taxus bushes.

The driveway winner had a cool looking brick section down the center. There were roots, vines and grass struggling to establish themselves amidst the bricks. I also loved how it ended into a bright green section of grass in the back yard. There were other candidates, but none with as much character as this driveway.

On my jog back home, I was reflecting on how much I enjoyed challenging myself today. Perhaps I’ll have to do a post later this year titled “Fire Hydrants and Telephone Poles”.
