One Lane Bridge
Hafermalz is one of the most unique streets in Lakewood. It is basically a series of parking lots only accessible via a one-way alley from Detroit Avenue or a “one lane bridge” from Riverside. I took the pic for this post from the Detroit Avenue access point.
I call the Riverside access point a “one lane bridge” because it reminds me of an actual one lane country bridge I used to drive over on the way to my parent’s house. The interesting thing about that bridge is I would always feel a bit nervous when I was on it, even if I stopped and looked to make sure I was the only one nearby. I feel the same way every time I drive down Hafermalz to park at Dewey’s Pizza.
That brings me to my favorite part of Hafermalz – Dewey’s Pizza. Our family probably gets pizza from Dewey’s once a month, and my son Joe even worked there last summer. My all-time favorite pizza is the Tito Santana (a take on a taco pizza named after a 1980s professional wrestler). If you want to try the Tito Santana pizza you are in luck. It is a seasonal pizza, but I read on a pizza blog (PMQ Pizza) that it is coming back Tuesday, April 30th to celebrate Cinco De Mayo. It will only be here for 6 weeks, so block off some time to stop by Hafermalz before it is gone.
