Love Grows Here
I had an enjoyable morning riding to Harlon and back. Harlon is a side street that goes one block east and one block west from Nicholson just north of the railroad tracks.
I’ve been noticing the diversity of trees our city has, especially on the tree lawns. According to the City of Lakewood website The Forestry Unit maintains an inventory of over 13,100 trees located on public property, including those on tree lawns and within parks. While not an unusual tree, the fullness of the maple trees on the Harlon tree lawns was incredible. I stood in the dark shade beneath one of them looking up into the dense foliage and wondered what was different about Harlon. Then I saw a sign on a tree lawn a few doors down. Evidently “Love Grows Here” on Harlon.
As I was returning home on my bike, I realized I have gotten to know quite a few crossing guards throughout the city. I have a new appreciation for their job of monitoring their intersections twice a day no matter what the weather. I always enjoy a quick chat while I wait to cross a busy intersection.
Two different crossing guards asked me what street I was up to today. When I answered Harlon, one woman said that was a mysterious sounding street. The other woman said it sounded like the name of a stripper. Maybe I am getting too comfortable with the crossing guards (though I am still chuckling as I type this post right now).
