New Sights to See
I always enjoy traveling to a new street. I have lived in Lakewood for 25 years and until today I had never walked, biked or even driven down Hird. Hird is tied with Coutant for the second most eastern street in the city. Hird runs parallel to W. 117th Street from Lake to Detroit, with Coutant continuing south from Detroit to Madison.
I passed all types of buildings on my walk down Hird. Near Lake it was mostly apartment buildings, changing to a residential zone near the railroad tracks. Then I passed several commercial properties, including the drive through pharmacy for a CVS, a giant Cubesmart storage center, and the relatively new Fieldhouse at Studio West 117 facility. There was a giant pizza mural on the side of the Studio West 117 building that had me craving for a slice. Lakewood has added many murals and paintings on the side of buildings throughout the city, but this one was the most appetizing I have seen yet. I looked up the location after my walk and learned it was advertising for “Eat Me” Pizzeria.
One other memorable landmark I noticed was a tall brick chimney completely covered in ivy. It was part of an industrial property, but there was a certain beauty to it that made me take a pic. This has to be the tallest green monolith in all of Lakewood.
