Lakeland

Hanging Out

Walking down Lakeland this afternoon felt like a perfect leisurely stroll through Lakewood. After a busy morning (my lawnmower broke and I needed to run to Home Depot to get a new one), I was looking forward to a long north-south street to unwind.

Lakeland goes through all the way to Edgewater on the northern end and runs to Delaware towards the south, with only a short interruption and detour between Hilliard and Madison. If you look at the map below you can see the bubble on my route.

The most noticeable thing for me was the tremendous number of homes that had hanging baskets on their front porches. As soon as I passed Detroit the first house on the right had a beautiful display that I snapped a picture of, but as I finished the block there were several other houses just as impressive. I’ve made this comment before, but I think when residents take pride in their home it is contagious and spreads to neighbors. If I lived on Lakeland I think I would join in on the flower basket parade.

As I was finishing up my walk near Delaware, there was a tree lawn filled with an assortment of items. Next to it was a giant orange sign that read “FREE”. Never one to pass up a treasure hunt I searched through the pile and found a vintage Magic Kit. My son Joe has always said he wanted to learn a magic trick or two, so this seemed like the perfect thing to snag. I improvised a holding spot on my tandem bike and pedaled home. My frustration from my lawn mower issues earlier in the day had dissipated and a now had a broad smile across my face.
