McKinley

Archaeology

McKinley is one of the few streets in Lakewood that starts north of the Interstate, crosses over the highway, and continues as a “Lakewood” street south of the highway. I walked the street during the morning commute, and there was a steady flow of traffic towards the McKinley entrance ramps to I-90.

While on the southern portion of the street, I noticed a front yard that had a gigantic rock located near the sidewalk. It looked like it had been dug up during some recent excavation work. It got me thinking, I wonder what other surprises are located in our yards just below the surface.

Our kids attended Harding Middle School, and in sixth grade they complete their own archaeological Lakewood digs for History class. One was completed at my office, one was at a friend’s house on Summit, and one was at a vacant lot off Clifton Boulevard. Just digging a few inches down, they found toy train cars, plastic silverware, coins, straws and even an old paper art project.

While passing over the highway, I also realized this section of I-90 was lower than the surrounding area. It too must have been completed dug up when the interstate was constructed. I can only imagine what historical treasures they must have unearthed during that project.
