On the Road Again
Today I felt like I was in a spin class. I knew I was going to have a long bike ride, but it turned into quite the trip. I reviewed my list of streets and noticed there was a Nelson Court and a Nelson Street. Google Maps showed Nelson Court off W. 117th street, so I jumped on the bike and powered down Lake Road. When I arrived though, it was just a small alley without any street signs. I made the quick judgement call to head over to Nelson Road instead.
I decided to really push the limits of my 1970s tandem. I raced as quickly as I could down Detroit Avenue. In fact, there was an RTA bus driving down the street at the same time, and with all the stops it made I was able to keep up with it all the way to Warren Road. After finishing my route, I noticed today ended up being my “Fastest 10K” with my average speed for the entire ride clocking in at just over 11 mph.
When I finally arrived at Nelson Street, I was delighted to see an actual street sign. I walked the small dead-end street of only 7 houses, and then snuck around the fence and crossed the railroad tracks to take a quick picture of the street looking back towards Cannon. There is also a secret cut-through at the end of the street to the back end of Webb Park.
I also have a new candidate for my favorite stump. When I walked Mars last Monday, I noticed my previous front-runner on the corner of Mars and Arden had actually been ground to mulch. I appreciated this stump at the end of Nelson, with lush ground cover and a bright flower basket on top. Even though very few people will probably ever walk past, it brightened up my day today.
