Overbrook

Birthday Celebrations

Today we celebrate our country’s 248th birthday. This has always been one of my favorite days of the year in Lakewood. It starts with the morning parade down Lake Avenue and ends with the best fireworks display in the area.

As I was strolling down Overbrook this morning, I was impressed with all of the decorations other than flags I saw in the yards. I considered the effort it took to put out the smaller flags, bunting and yard decorations. Many of these tiny items might go unnoticed by those walking by, but I took extra effort to discover them today. There was even one yard that had several decorative items staked in the landscaping, including an antique truck complete with star wheels and a red, white and blue pennant down the side of the truck. I think the abundance of decorations shows the pride Lakewood residents have in our July 4th celebration.

I also saw an impressive plaque on a home near the end of Overbrook. The homeowner was on the porch, so I asked her about it. She said it was to celebrate the 100th “birthday” of her home. It had turned 100 this year, and she had purchased the brass engraved plaque through the Lakewood Historical Society. She had even researched the original owner of her home to include his name on the plaque. What a great way to show pride in your home!
