Black-Eyed Susans
Parkway is a short macaroni shaped street that curves away from Lewis near Detroit before reconnecting with Lewis again as you approach Franklin. The neighborhood is across the street from St. Edwards High School. Today the street was a park-like escape from the major construction activity that was taking place all along Lewis.
As I was enjoying my walk down the street, I noticed a front yard with a large patch of Black-Eyed Susans in the landscaping. They have always been my favorite flower. They remind me of our family cottage in Canada where the yellow and black flowers grow in the wild along the side of the driveway and nearby nature trails.
My mom has several patches at her house, and she recently let me dig up a few clusters to replant in my yard. They were doing quite well until the deer found them and ate them down to the ground. Perhaps the deer also find them attractive.
My favorite house on the street was located at the northern intersection with Lewis. The house was perched up on a hill, with a multi-tiered walkway up to the front door. The hillside was covered with ivy and flowers that made the approach to the steps feel inviting. I wonder if the mail carrier enjoys the walk every day or if the beauty is overshadowed by the trudge up the many steps.
