The Best Bookends in Lakewood
Sloane Avenue begins with BEER, ends with COOKIES and has a SUBWAY in the middle. As I turned from West Clifton onto Sloane this morning, the first building I passed was Immigrant Son Brewery. Our Lakewood neighbors (the Revy Family) run this establishment, and they have my favorite Lakewood beer. It is called the Hungarian Pearl and is a Kolsch (there is supposed to be two little dots over the “o”). I strongly suggest you stop by to test out all of their Lakewood-made brews and also enjoy their dinner menu. I have eaten my share of Giant House-Made Pierogis as appetizers.
Make sure you save room for desert though. The other end of Sloane is home to Blackbird Bakery and their award-winning Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies. There were several people standing near the RTA station near Sloane and Detroit this morning, and Jocelynn offered to snap my picture next to the bakery sign as I rubbed my belly just thinking about my favorite Lakewood treat. She quickly said that she agreed that they have the best cookies in town. I even ordered them to have at my 50th Birthday party last year.
As I was returning home, I made a detour down Sloane Subway. It is a short “U” shaped street that ducks under the railway bridge along the eastern shore of the Rocky River. If you have never walked along this tiny street, it is worth the effort. I have always wanted to stand underneath the bridge as a train barreled across the river.
