Downtown Lakewood
I think if you asked most Lakewood residents where Downtown Lakewood is, the most common answer would be the intersection of Warren and Detroit. It just feels like the city center. Detroit is our busiest east-west commercial street and Warren is the main artery that connects I-90 to Detroit. I snapped a picture of that intersection as the sun was rising this morning, an hour or so before these streets started bustling.
I really enjoyed walking the entire length of Warren today – all the way from Clifton to I-90. I found myself taking stock of all the different buildings located on this street. In addition to there being 3 different Little Free Libraries, I passed the following:
- Lakewood Post Office
- Fire Station No. 1 (Headquarters)
- Breakfast Diner (The Place to Be)
- New Pizza Joint (Booms)
- Regional Bank Headquarters (First Federal of Lakewood)
- Drug Store, Paint Store, Urgent Care and Gas Station all on the same corner (Warren and Madison)
- Ice Skating Rink
And this is not even a complete list. There are also long sections of housing and a mid-rise condo complex (Kirtland House). Amongst all of this variety I also noticed an abundance of public art. Murals were located on several buildings along Warren (I think I counted 6 in total). My favorite was on the south-west corner of Warren and Detroit near the bus stop (I took a picture to share). I think I finished Warren feeling a bit like the kids in the mural – excited with all of my discoveries.
