Waterbury

Passing Notes

What a great Lakewood afternoon! I had a really busy morning, and it was a bit difficult motivating myself to head out and complete my street after lunch. However, once I got out on the tandem heading over to Waterbury my mood quickly turned to anticipation of what the day might bring.

Waterbury is a surprisingly long street that connects with Detroit near St. Edward High School, travelling all the way south to Lakewood Heights Boulevard and the far southeastern corner of our city.

Soon after starting off my walk I passed my office assistants house (Caroline). Though she wasn’t home, I was delighted to find a handwritten note for me attached to a spruce bush in her front yard. Finding it felt like discovering a secret message.

Then my timing worked out perfectly to meet up with Jo Higgins from Lakewood Alive. She had just pulled in her driveway near Franklin as I was walking by. Her husband Patrick and daughter Sage joined Jo and me for part of the walk. We convinced a gentleman to take a break from splitting logs to snap a picture of our group behind the A to Z bike. Sage helped my look for gnomes and fairies in the front yards along the way.

As I was finishing my walk I noticed a text from my daughter asking me to pick up her gym bag from a friend of hers on Clarence. Lucky for me that was only one street over from Waterbury. I stopped by and grabbed the bag on my way home, saving time and gas. Then I ran into a group of friends from my Church as I was finishing up my bike ride down Lake Road. As I finally pedaled back into my driveway about an hour later, I had a big smile across my face. Like I said – what a great Lakewood afternoon!
